Carroll A Disgrace To The Toon No 9 Shirt

01 February 2011 01:23
Yes we've heard it all before. Wayne Rooney: "Once a Blue always a Blue"; Alan Smith: "I will play for anyone BUT Man Utd!"; and Andy Carroll "There is only ONE club I want to play for!" Their passion and loyalty is a lesson to us all. Until someone mentions "money"! Liverpool completed the signing of Newcastle's Andy Carroll for £35million to offset the loss of Fernando Torres to Chelsea. Carroll's exit saw Newcastle boss Alan Pardew's worst fears realised. We have to see out the season with two strikers from four -  Shola Ameobi, Leon Best, Peter Lovenkrands and Nile Ranger. Liverpool's initial bid of £30million bid was rejected, and a second improved offer was similarly dismissed. However, Carroll handed in a transfer request and Newcastle issued a statement: "A British record transfer fee has been agreed between Newcastle United and Liverpool for Magpies striker Andy Carroll. "The 22-year-old England international has handed in a transfer request, which has reluctantly been accepted by the club." All January we have heard Carroll insisting: "I owe Newcastle so much for giving me the famous number nine shirt, you have no idea what it means to me. "There is only one club I want to play for. "Newcastle offered me a five year contract and I didn't even have to think about it." WE ASK YOU - Why did Andy Carroll walk out on Newcastle? PLEASE VOTE IN OUR POLL -   Wednesday 02nd February 2011    Fulham  v  Newcastle 20.00  Saturday 05th February 2011   Newcastle  v  Arsenal 15.00  Saturday 12th February 2011   Blackburn  v  Newcastle 15.00  Tuesday 15th February 2011   Birmingham  v  Newcastle 19.45  Saturday 26th February 2011    Newcastle  v  Bolton 15.00  Saturday 05th March 2011   Newcastle  v  Everton 15.00  Saturday 19th March 2011   Stoke City  v  Newcastle 15.00  Fulham FC - Craven Cottage Directions & Car Parking From the North M1Thanks to Robert Donaldson, a visiting Stockport County fan, for providing the following directions; 'At the end of the M1, turn right (west) onto the A406 (North Circular) and follow it towards Harrow for nearly 4.5 miles. Turn left (east) onto the A40 heading into London (passing close to Loftus Road and after a little over 4 miles turn right (west) onto the A402 for just about 350 yards. Here you turn left (south) along the A219 for a little over half a mile. This brings you into Hammersmith where you turn right onto the A315 and then after just 130 yards or so turn left (south) back onto the A219. Follow this road for a little over a mile, and the ground down the side streets off to your right. From The North M40 & West M25 Leave the M25 at Junction 15 and take the M4, which then becomes the A4, towards Central London. After around two miles branch off left into Hammersmith Broadway (before the flyover). Go around the ring road around central Hammersmith, keeping to the right. Then take the A219 Fulham Palace Road. Keep straight on this road, passing Charing Cross Hospital on your left. After about another half a mile turn right into Crabtree Lane for the ground. From the South M25Leave the M25 at Junction 10 and take the A3 towards Central London. After around eight miles, leave the A3 at the turn off for the A219. Take the A219 towards Putney. Continue straight on this road, down Putney High Street and across Putney Bridge. You will see the ground on your left. Parking close to the ground can be quite difficult as Jim Huegett informs me; 'please note that parking on the streets near to the ground is restricted to one hour 'pay & display' on matchdays. This isn't obvious from the parking meters and signage and the wardens are out in force on match day'. To compound matters these restrictions are also in place for Bank Holidays, Sundays and evenings up to 9.30pm, so it will be a case of finding some parking further away from the stadium. By Tube/Train The nearest tube station is Putney Bridge, which is on the District Line. The ground is about a fifteen minute walk. Turn left out of the station and then just follow the other supporters. You get a nice pleasant walk through Bishops Park along the riverbank to the ground (note that the park is closed after evening games). Tony Baker adds; 'Those wishing to avoid the Tube can use the Putney National Rail station, which can be reached from Waterloo and Clapham Junction. Its about a 15 or 20 minute walk to the ground. Turn right upon leaving the station, and keep going straight, down Putney High Street and over Putney Bridge. You will meet the crowds from the Tube station here. Follow them along the riverbank through Bishops Park and to the ground'. Where To Drink David Frear adds; 'The Crabtree on Rainville Road (10 minutes from the ground) welcomes all away supporters and as a Fulham season ticket holder I can tell you that as long as you don't watch your football at Loftus Road you can be assured of a warm welcome'. To find this pub go along Stevenage Road away from the Cottage and the away end. On reaching the home end of the ground, turn left along an alley which runs behind the stand. When you reach the River Thames turn right and walk along the riverside path. You will reach the Crabtree on your right. Andrew Johnson recommends; 'the Zulu Bar (formerly the Kings Head), on Fulham High Street, is one of the nearest to the ground and is always popular with away fans'. Otherwise near to the tube station is the 'Eight Bells' and just further along Fulham High Street is 'The Kings Arms' and O'Neills. Away Fans Away fans are housed to one side of the new Putney End Stand, on the river side of the ground. The stand will be shared with home supporters, with away fans being allocated around 3,000 seats, which is just under half of the overall capacity of this stand. One huge benefit that the new Putney End stand has over the old terrace, is that it has a roof. There are a couple of supporting pillars that could impede your view, but this only applies to certain seats in Row DD and above. The leg room is ample and as the rows of stand seem to have been constructed from metal and plywood, rather than concrete, fans can't resist making some noise, by stamping up and down on it. Food and drink are served from a number of outlets and stalls situated behind the stands. These areas although mostly covered are not enclosed, which is great in the Summer but can be rather cold in Winter. However if you go to the outlets around to the left of the stand then you can enjoy some nice views of the Thames, whilst having your beer. Cans of Tetleys, Guinness and plastic bottles of Carlsberg (500ml) are available at £3.50. The Club offer an interesting range of pies by Vilis. Including amongst others Lamb & Mint (£3), Vegetable (£3), Cottage Pie (£3.50) and Sausage Rolls (£2.50). You could also get a roll with a Cumberland sausage filling (£3.50). On my last visit I did try the Lamb & Mint pie, but I have to admit that it was not my 'cup of tea'. Generally there seems to be enough food and drink outlets available so that the queues were never too long (those located on the Thames side, hardly even had a queue at half time (even though on my last visit the away section was sold out). Around the concourses are flat screen televisions showing the game going on inside and I have been previously to Craven Cottage on a number of occasions and on a nice summer day, this is one of my favourite grounds. From the walk from the tube station through a park, to having a pint overlooking the River Thames, this can be quite an enjoyable experience and I have never had any problems there. The walk down Stevenage Road to the away entrance, gives you chance to admire the quaint red brick facade of the Johnny Haynes Stand, whilst inside you can enjoy modern facilities, and apart from the game, you can still catch glimpses of rowers making their away along the Thames. I have to say the recent re-developments have made a great ground even better and there is now a superb blend of the new and the old, giving the ground great individuality and character. My only grumble has been sometimes the rather large police presence outside the ground (including mounted police and dog handlers), before and after the games that I have attended. One would have thought they were expecting a riot. On one of my visits the Birmingham Fans were chanting to the Fulham fans, "you only sing when you're rowing!" One other item of interest is that Fulham is the only Club that I know of that has a designated area of the ground reserved for 'neutral supporters'. This is located on one side of the Putney End, adjacent to the away fans section. I guess that the original idea was to attract tourists to London to a game. However, for each game there seems to be a good mix, of home, away and neutral fans in this area. Both away fans and neutral supporters use the same entrance and both can access the same facilities at the back of the stand. Att: 51,010 With one week remaining of the transfer market, Alan Pardew was again reminded how much we are in need of a quality striker. Right from the start of Pardew's reign as manager he built his system around young Andy Carroll, and boy has the Toon number 9 been missed in recent games. Did Leon Best just strike it lucky with his hat-trick against West Ham ... because I'm starting to believe that purple patch of 70 minutes against the Hammers flattered him in the extreme. Is Best lacking the qualities to be a top Premiership striker? Is Shola Ameobi missing his Geordie buddy (Carroll) to feed off? Is Lovenkrands past his best? Sadly I'd have to say "yes" to all three. Don't get me wrong - I thought the patched up Toon side put up a brave fight against a side pushing for Champions League glory - and all credit to them for coming so close to the three points. But not since the days of Alan Shearer, have we depended so much on one player the way we depend on Carroll. Aaron Lennon broke Newcastle's hearts at the death, as once again as (just like at the Stadium of Shite) we couldn't close out a game with a 1-0 lead. Lennon struck a minute into injury time just when it looked as though Fabricio Coloccini's 59th-minute strike had handed the Magpies all three points. Spurs would argue that they deserved at least a point after dominating for long periods, but Pardew will argue "we blew it - again!" Leon Best and Luka Modric both hit the bar and the Magpies were indebted to goalkeeper Steve Harper for two fine saves. The visitors started at a high tempo and lone striker Jermain Defoe whipped a third-minute shot across Harper's goal after keeper Carlo Cudicini, deputising for the injured Heurelho Gomes, sparked a lightning attack with an early throw to Lennon. Defoe was to prove a thorn in the Newcastle side for much of the opening 45 minutes, although without troubling Harper unduly until the dying seconds of injury time. Spurs dominated possession, but as the Magpies got men behind the ball, they struggled to break their hosts down. Man-of-the moment Gareth Bale, who lined up at left-back with new signing Steven Pienaar taking over ahead of him, lasted just 11 minutes before limping off to be replaced by Tyneside old boy Sebastien Bassong, and that removed one potential problem for Pardew's men. There were plenty of others, however, although the Newcastle boss will have been reasonably satisfied with the way those challenges were met by his players. Indeed, they started to make an impression themselves and after Shola Ameobi had failed to hit the target with two half-chances, they almost took the lead with 28 minutes gone. Jose Enrique, who was largely occupied by Lennon, got forward well to send an inviting cross to the far post, where Best slid in to divert the ball on to the crossbar. Spurs finished the half with a flurry, and almost went in front in injury time when they put together their best move of the half. Rafael van der Vaart flicked Pienaar's pass into the path of Defoe, who seemed certain to score before Harper spread himself to make a vital block. Newcastle returned in determined mood with Best proving a handful in the opening minutes of the second half, heading wide from a Jonas Gutierrez cross and seeing a shot blocked as he caused problems on the edge of the box. But as the home side pushed men forward, the visitors started to exploit the space they left behind, although Pienaar in particular was unable to make the most of several promising openings. However, it was the home side who took the lead in stunning fashion with 59 minutes gone when Coloccini controlled Danny Guthrie's cross on his chest before smashing a shot past Cudicini. Tottenham would have been level within six minutes had it not been for another crucial intervention by Harper, who turned Lennon's well-struck shot around the post with the visitors responding. Harry Redknapp sent on striker Peter Crouch for midfielder Jermaine Jenas with 19 minutes remaining, but Newcastle could have been 2-0 up within seconds when Joey Barton split the Spurs defence and substitute Peter Lovenkrands saw his first-time shot blocked by Cudicini. Harper had his crossbar to thank for denying Modric a 76th-minute equaliser with a fine right-foot drive, but substitute Nile Ranger wasted a glorious opportunity to secure victory in the final minute of normal time. The miss proved costly in injury time when Lennon cut inside and blasted a right-foot shot past Harper to snatch a point.
