Carling Cup preview

26 August 2009 11:10
Three more Premier League sides will be hoping to advance to the third round of the Carling Cup on Wednesday night. All nine top-flight teams to have played in the competition have made it through their opening tests, although Tuesday's action was overshadowed by the violence that erupted at Upton Park. Tottenham have been Carling Cup finalists for the past two years and are the early pace-setters in the Premier League after winning their opening three games. Harry Redknapp could make several changes but Spurs will be looking to continue their fine form against a Doncaster side currently struggling in the Championship. Wigan will be hoping to bounce back from a crushing defeat at home to Manchester United as they travel to Bloomfield Road to face Championship draw specialists Blackpool. Stoke have made a solid start to the season and now go in search of their first away win of the season against League One outfit Leyton Orient. Championship leaders Cardiff entertain in-form Bristol Rovers, while Newcastle are also at home against League One opposition as they tackle Huddersfield. Rotherham shocked Derby in the first round and will be setting their sights on another major scalp as they visit West Brom, while Bristol City meet Carlisle at Ashton Gate.
