Capello - Owen still an option

England manager Fabio Capello has dismissed suggestions that he has consigned Michael Owen to the international history books. The Newcastle forward has won only one cap during the 13-month tenure of England's Italian boss, who insists on selecting players that are 100 per cent fit and playing regularly at club level. It was thought that Owen could have been requested to solve the current injury crisis England are experiencing ahead of Wednesday's World Cup qualifier against Ukraine at Wembley. Owen was considered to be a candidate in the wake of Carlton Cole and Emile Heskey's injuries but, with the Magpies star having struggled for fitness this campaign, Capello implied the 29-year-old was part of England's 'history'. Darren Bent was the preferred option, only for the Tottenham striker to limp out of the Three Lions' squad on Tuesday to be replaced by Aston Villa's out-of-form forward Gabriel Agbonlahor, suggesting Owen had no future under Capello. But the former Juventus, Roma and AC Milan chief insists that is not the case, saying: "I know about the debate with Owen but I am focused on tomorrow's game, not players who are not here. "But if you look back, in every interview I have done, I have always said the door is open to every player. The same is true for him (Owen)."
