Can Barton Handle The Heat In The Lion's Den?

19 August 2011 12:10
Joey Barton knows he's a marked man going into tomorrow's Wear-Tyne tussle, but Alan Pardew says he has to face the fact he brings it upon himself. (Above) The Stadium Of Light Alan Pardew: “I don’t need to tell Joey (what will happen). “Joey will tell me probably. Today, maybe tomorrow, tomorrow evening and Saturday – he’ll tell me ‘they’ll target me today, gaffer’. And I mean that in the nicest possible way, I might add. “I’m sure Cattermole will be saying the same for them. He’s a fiery character. Him and Joey are going to be in the same sort of area and it’ll be a feature of the game. “Joey has been in the Press a fair bit this week – more than Joey would have liked and more than I would have liked – but the other thing they will be focusing on is he is a very good player, of course, and they need to stop him. “Probably that is more of a worry to Steve (Bruce), I should think. “Me and him have had a lot of conversations about Twitter and his profile and everything else and I think he now understands that the best answer he can give is with his performances on the pitch. “I think he did that. That one incident that happened got highlighted, but his performance was very good and one of the best on the pitch, for either team.  “He understands that. This week, as you’ll have seen, he’s been a lot quieter on there and I think both he and us are better for that. “It’s not just about Joey, it’s about Newcastle United. All the fans who really love Joey love him because he’s a footballer. “In today’s society, I can’t tell Joey to shut up, just like I wouldn’t tell any of you to shut up in your private life. “You are your own person. All I can give him is my advice and my guidance and I have definitely given him that.” WEEKEND'S FIXTURES: Saturday 20th August 2011   Sunderland  v  Newcastle United 12:00 Arsenal  v  Liverpool 12:45 Aston Villa  v  Blackburn Rovers 15:00 Everton  v  Queens Park Rangers 15:00 Swansea City  v  Wigan Athletic 15:00 Chelsea  v  West Bromwich Albion 17:30  Sunday 21st August 2011   Norwich City  v  Stoke City 13:30 Wolverhampton Wanderers  v  Fulham 14:00 Bolton Wanderers  v  Manchester City 16:00  Monday 22nd August 2011   Manchester United  v  Tottenham Hotspur 20 NEXT GAME .
