Sir Bobby Robson brought Hugo Viana to Tyneside hoping the player billed "The Best Young Player In Europe" would bring success to St James' Park.

It didn't happen, Viana never got out of first gear at Newcastle, but he has insisted that the Magpies are good enough to make an emotional return to the Champions League.

Hugo Viana: “The fans were unbelievable, so it was a pleasure for me.

“It’s good to see Newcastle doing well. I hope they can play in the Champions League again, like we did under Sir Bobby Robson – I think they are good enough to do it.

“They were great moments.

“My time in Newcastle was a good, it was a very good experience.

“The fans were unbelievable, so it was a pleasure for me.

“Now I just want to see them get back.

“It was nice to see a few very good guys that I had the pleasure to meet in Newcastle.

“I had great moments with them.

“I was special for me, because it was my first club outside of Portugal."
