Blackpool v Newcastle preview

16 September 2009 09:18
Newcastle welcome back striker Andy Carroll, while Blackpool forward Ben Burgess is the home side's only injury doubt. Carroll has missed the last four games with a groin problem but is now fit again, much to the surprise of caretaker manager Chris Hughton. "In all honesty we thought the game would be too soon for him, but he has had two good sessions and is in the squad," he told the club's official website. Shola Ameobi is a long-term absentee with a stress fracture to his foot, while Alan Smith, who was sent off in the closing stages of Sunday's 1-0 win at Cardiff, must serve a one-match ban. Nicky Butt will be pushing for a start after he could only make the bench against the Bluebirds following a dislocated thumb, while Peter Lovenkrands will also hope for a starting berth after featuring from the bench in recent weeks. Blackpool team news Blackpool's Burgess is rated as 50/50 to shake off a swollen knee which flared up once more after he returned to the Seasiders' starting line-up in the weekend defeat at Leicester. Former Watford forward Hameur Bouazza is expected to make his home debut after signing a deal at Bloomfield Road last week. Ahead of the game Blackpool boss Ian Holloway has called on his side to cast off their supposed "small team" mentality. "This sort of air about us, this 'oh we've done well, we've punched above our weight' - what a load of rubbish. I'm sick and fed up of 'little Blackpool' because I don't think we are little," he told the Blackpool Gazette. "I want to banish that because I still think I can see little bits of it. I want my players to be proud of what they do and the way they've been doing it. This is the Championship."
