Northumbria Police has planned for a number of large scale events in Newcastle city centre this weekend.
The English Defence League and Newcastle Unites are both holding marches and demonstrations in the city centre on Saturday afternoon, May 25.
The policing operation will allow people the right to peaceful protest, protect the safety of everyone in the city and prevent serious disorder and damage.
A Northumbria Police spokesman said: "Newcastle will be open for business - shops and pubs will operate as usual.
"But there may be some minor disruption around road closures needed to facilitate the marches."
Newcastle Area Commander Chief Superintendent Gary Calvert said: "We appreciate that the events in London on Thursday may have heightened community concerns about this weekend's planned protests in Newcastle.
"We are constantly monitoring the situation and will continue to adapt accordingly. There haven't been any incidents or issues locally and there's nothing to suggest anything is going to happen here. However there are extra patrols out across the force area to reassure communities.
"We have been planning for Saturday's events for several months and have adequate resources in place to deal with any eventuality.
"Public safety is our absolute priority and our aim at all times is to allow these events to pass off peacefully with the minimum of disruption," he said.
"Northumbria Police has extensive experience in policing large scale events. We are confident we have the necessary skills and resources to police this event, while continuing to provide a full policing service to the rest of the force area.
"The police act in a neutral capacity and have no power to ban a static assembly or protest which is arranged for a peaceful purpose, but we can agree on conditions.
"This means there are limits on how far the demonstrators can march and how long the protests will last. And when the events are over, they will be guided back to their transport.
"We've been working with the leaders of the groups involved to ensure the day passes off peacefully. We expect everyone to respect that, and also to respect the rights of others on that day.
"It is the responsibility of the groups involved to ensure they act in a peaceful manner and we will take appropriate action against those who don't behave in this way.
"We also recognise the impact such events have on local communities and appreciate some people may be concerned. I want to reassure them that we are absolutely determined to maintain public safety across the city that day.
"And although there may be some temporary minor disruption on the roads Newcastle will be open for business - shops and pubs will operate as usual."
Northumbria Police has been working closely with Newcastle City Council and other agencies, as well as local communities and local businesses to address any concerns and reassure local people that their city remains a safe place.
The routes and timings for both the EDL and Newcastle Unites have now been confirmed.
The EDL will move off from Grainger Street at 1.30pm, across the junction with Westgate Road and across the junction with Newgate Street.
They will continue on Grainger Street to the junction with Market Street, turn onto Grey Street, onto High Bridge and then onto Bigg Market to their assembly point.
Newcastle Unites will move off from the City Hall at 1.30pm, go along John Dobson Street, turn right onto North Street Road, right through Saville Chambers to its junction with Northumberland Street.
They will then turn right onto Northumberland Street, go up Northumberland Street to the Haymarket, onto Percy Street and down to Newgate Street to their assembly point.
Both groups will protest for one hour from 2pm before dispersing.
There will be some parking restrictions on Saturday on the following streets - Northumberland Road, College Street, North Street, Newgate Street, Nun Street, Forth Street, Ord Street, St John's Street, Grey Street, High Bridge Square, Bigg Market and Cloth Market.
Bus services are likely to be disrupted by road closures during the course of the march between around 1.30pm and 3.30pm. People should allow extra time for their journey and seek advice from their driver.
