Bassong reveals interest

Newcastle defender Sebastien Bassong has revealed that he has had an approach from Arsenal as he looks to stay in England. The 22-year-old has made no secret of the fact that he wants to leave the troubled Magpies after the club suffered relegation to the Championship last season. The Frenchman admits that he has had plenty of offers from abroad but he would prefer a move to the Premier League. Bassong was perhaps one of few Newcastle players to come out of last term with any credit, as he excelled in his first ever season in the top flight following his move from Metz last summer. The Gunners have been linked with the centre-half for some time now and the player has confirmed that he favours a move to the Emirates. "I can confirm that," he told France Football when asked if there was interest from Arsenal. "There has been an approach. But for the moment, there is nothing concrete. "Foreign teams have made enquiries but as my priority is to stay in England, I haven't followed them through. "Clearly it would be better if everything went quicker but I am not worried." With Newcastle deep in takeover talks over a prospective new owner and currently without a manager, Bassong understands that any deal could take some time to complete. "Some Premier League clubs are interested in me but not everything is simple given that Newcastle are in the process of being bought out and the name of the future manager is still not known."
