Bassong in determined mood

Newcastle defender Sebastian Bassong says he is determined to help the club stay in the Premier League. Bassong signed for Newcastle in the summer from Metz and he has been one of the few plus points in an otherwise disappointing campaign. The Frenchman is now desperate for the Magpies to win their battle against the drop. "Newcastle means a lot to me and I don't want the club to go down in my first season," he told The Chronicle. "They gave me a great opportunity in the Premiership, so it's very, very important for me to help Newcastle stay in the league. "I think we can still win this fight - we have to. Everyone believes that we can do it. "The situation is starting to get very hard for us, but we just have to be ready for the next game." Argentine winger Jonas Gutierrez also insists that there is still belief within the club that they will stay up. "We want to lift ourselves from this position," Gutierrez said. "There is still belief. That is important, we have to believe in ourselves because if we don't then it is impossible to do it. "All the matches for us are going to be very difficult. No team is easy for anybody. We know that we have matches that are very important and that we have to take points."
