Barton Set To Miss Everton Game

03 March 2011 15:22
Joey Barton looks set to miss Everton's visit to St James's Park on Saturday. But Shola Ameobi, Stephen Ireland and Danny Guthrie have successfully returned to training this week, and all could be involved. The trio – and boyhood Everton fan Barton – will be assessed over the next 24 hours by the club’s medical staff ahead of the game. John Carver: “We’ll know more on Joey soon after the medical staff have had a look at him. “He’s being assessed, and they’ll see if he’s okay. “It’s been a good week in training for Shola and Stephen Ireland and that has to be looked at as two real pluses. Danny Guthrie’s also back and in contention again.” Kevin Keegan has told Alan Pardew that he can forget any promises off Mike Ashley. Keegan has told Pardew not to make plans for the £35 million Newcastle raised in selling Andy Carroll to Liverpool. Kevin Keegan (on Radio Five Live): "I saw an interview with Alan Pardew where he said he hoped to get some of the £35 million and I thought 'Alan, you ain't going to get any of that'. "I think £35million for Andy Carroll...if I'd been manager I'd have taken it. "But how can you spend it on the last day of the transfer window? "My big argument was that we were selling James Milner for a lot of money - probably above the value we put on him - and I said, 'Please don't sell him before we get someone in'. "The reason I didn't want them to put that out and to hold on a little longer was so I could get a good value signing. It's business; it's a sensible way to do to do it. "If you sell Milner for £11 million then they say, 'If he's worth £11 million, our guy must be worth £9 million.'' PLEASE VOTE: Will Pardew get the dosh? Att: 48,062 This draw at St James' Park extended the Magpies' run to one loss in nine, but it was a two-footed challenge by Ryan Taylor that spoilt the match. Whether he should have been sent off is open to question, but regardless, it blew our chance of three points. Daniel Sturridge's fourth goal in as many games gave the Trotters the draw, but we should have done better and gained revenge for that 5-1 horror show earlier in the season. Taylor was making just his fifth appearance of the season on his return from an ankle ligament injury, and obviously Alan Pardew sees more in the ex-Wigan midfielder/defender than Chris Hughton. The Toon boss said this week he was delighted to have the player back in his squad, while Hughton usually had him on the back-burner. Sturridge, on loan from Chelsea, caused problems from the off. Fabricio Coloccini repeatedly needed the help of full-back Jose Enrique to keep the striker at bay, although the Spaniard had his own hands full with Elmander, who was a major threat on the wing. But Newcastle gave as good as they got in a thrilling first half, during which play switched rapidly from end to end. The home side took the lead with 13 minutes gone, and yet again, it was Nolan who did the trick. Not for the first time, he demonstrated his knack of finding space inside a crowded penalty area to meet Cheick Tiote's driven cross, and his deft header was too good for Jussi Jaaskelainen. The Finn had kept out Peter Lovenkrands' near-post flick seconds earlier, and later needed David Wheater's help to prevent Leon Best's shot ending up in the back of the net. Best headed a Taylor free-kick just over the bar with 28 minutes gone. The former Wigan man was a late replacement for Joey Barton, who suffered an injury during the warm-up. Only a last-ditch tackle by full-back Marcos Alonso denied Taylor seconds later - but Sturridge continued to look the man most likely to drag Bolton back into the game, and he did just that seven minutes before the break. A rare mistake from Tiote allowed Elmander to find the striker, and he shifted the ball on to his left foot before shooting unerringly into the bottom corner. Lovenkrands helped a Tiote effort just over the bar and Nolan bravely blocked an Elmander drive as the half drew to a close. Jaaskelainen was back in action within three minutes of the restart after Enrique spun away from Elmander with ease before surging into the penalty area and unleashing a powerful shot. However, Alonso fired over from 20 yards and Steve Harper had to get down well to claim Gary Cahill's deflected drive as Bolton responded. But the momentum shifted significantly with 54 minutes gone when Taylor launched himself at Elmander and was dismissed by referee Chris Foy, who had little choice but to produce the red card. Bolton instantly sensed an opportunity and committed more men to the search for a winner, and Coloccini and Mike Williamson found themselves firmly in the firing line as they were forced to deal with a series of dangerous crosses. Lovenkrands dropped into the wide midfield berth vacated by Taylor to leave Best alone up front, and there was little the former Coventry man could do to help stem the tide. Magpies boss Alan Pardew made his move with 23 minutes remaining when he sent on central defender Steven Taylor for Jonas Gutierrez and striker Nile Ranger for Lovenkrands, and went to a back three. Ranger headed over from Taylor's 70th-minute cross, but it took a priceless goal-line clearance from Nolan to keep out Martin Petrov's effort five minutes later. There was late drama when Jaaskelainen had to scuttle across his line to collect the ball after Paul Robinson had chested Best's cross a little too firmly towards goal. Att: 47,683 Ten-man Newcastle gave manager Joe Kinnear another tonic as they scrapped to a precious point against European contenders Everton. Kinnear left hospital on Saturday after undergoing a triple heart bypass, hoping a second successive Barclays Premier League victory would aid his recovery. His hopes were dealt a serious blow when midfielder Kevin Nolan was sent off for a dreadful 43rd-minute challenge on Victor Anichebe, but he will have been delighted by the spirit his team showed to battle to a point. Two first-half saves from goalkeeper Steve Harper ensured a first clean sheet in nine league games, and Peter Lovenkrands and substitute Jonas Gutierrez might even have snatched victory in a full-blooded contest. The day had started with a protest against Mike Ashley's regime in the city centre, but it ended with a positive result which eased Newcastle slightly further away from the drop zone. The draw extended Everton's recent run to one defeat in 14 games in all competitions, but they will feel two more points were theirs for the taking. They arrived on Tyneside with a squad depleted by injury and suspension, and their woes deepened inside an eventful opening 45 minutes through a combination of misfortune and Nolan's rush of blood. The game was only three minutes old when Mikel Arteta challenged Lovenkrands and landed awkwardly, grasping his knee in agony. He was eventually carried off on a stretcher to join banned duo Tim Cahill and Tony Hibbert and the injured Leon Osman, Steven Pienaar and Ayegbeni Yakubu on the sidelines, and Anichebe's name was also added to the list. The striker limped off after being caught by Nolan's two-footed tackle, which prompted an instant red card from referee Lee Mason. Mr Mason was roundly booed by the home fans, although television replays revealed he had little choice. The visitors were by far the sharper team during the early encounters and had two glorious opportunities to take a lead which would have been well deserved. Sebastien Bassong needlessly conceded a 19th-minute corner, although he atoned for his error when, after Harper got a hand to Joseph Yobo's glancing header, he hacked the rebound off the line. Harper then managed to block Jack Rodwell's 29th-minute effort at the far post with his legs as the Toffees threatened to blow their hosts away, just as Merseyside neighbours Liverpool had done in December. However, the best chance of the first half came at the other end two minutes later when Shola Ameobi and Nolan combined to put Lovenkrands in on keeper Tim Howard. The Dane steadied himself but pushed his left-foot shot wide of the post. Ryan Taylor curled a free-kick just over five minutes later as the Magpies started to dominate, but it was then that Nolan's tenacity got the better of him and with Marouane Fellaini replacing Anichebe, Newcastle were under the cosh once again. Damien Duff made way for Jonas Gutierrez at the break, but it was the visitors who started strongly once again with Yobo blazing a shot inches over the bar within three minutes of the restart. In their current predicament the Magpies knew they could not afford to sit back and settle for a draw, and Howard was called into action once again to punch away Ryan Taylor's driven 51st-minute free-kick. David Moyes' side continued to dominate possession as lone striker Ameobi struggled to hold the ball up, and caretaker boss Chris Hughton made his move when he replaced him with Obafemi Martins, making his first appearance since December after undergoing hernia surgery. Everton were making the most of their numerical advantage as they moved the ball quickly and confidently around the pitch, although they were not finding many holes in the Newcastle defence. Substitute Louis Saha fired high over under extreme pressure from the impressive Bassong and Phil Jagielka blasted a free-kick well off target as time ran down, but the Magpies managed to hang on to gain some reward for a gutsy display.    TOON v EVERTON - THE HISTORY ... 2010/2011 Sat 18 Sep Everton 0 - 1 Newcastle Utd.
