Newcastle United chief scout Graham Carr insisted being offered an eight-year contract by the club proves that owner Mike Ashley is on Tyneside for the long haul.

Graham Carr: “I had no idea what was coming with regarding my contract. I have meetings with Mike, who is a busy man, all the time, but when I sat down this time it turned out that the meeting was about me!

“I am absolutely delighted to be given this contract and it proves that Mike is definitely at Newcastle United for the long haul.

"There is no question about that. He knows, as we all do, that we can’t compete with some clubs in the transfer market, but that doesn’t mean he’s not ambitious in the transfer market. That’s where I come in.

“Mike wants the club to progress year after year. He is absolutely determined about that. I love my job, but then I love Newcastle United.

"That makes the job so much better for me. I like seeing the team do well because this is my team.

“The job is non-stop. People might think that just because the season has stopped that we take a break. It’s far from the case.

“We have this summer to go out looking for players, because it’s during the pre-season transfer window, then it gets really busy before Christmas and the January window.

"We are always on the look-out for good players to bring to the club and I will continue to do that.”

Managing director, Derek Llambias: “We are delighted to have agreed an eight-year deal with Graham, and very pleased that he has committed his long-term future to the club.

“He has been instrumental in helping us to bring some truly exceptional players to Newcastle United and he has deservedly built one of the best reputations in the business.

“Graham works tirelessly to identify talented young players from across the world and has done a magnificent job over the last two years.

“He has the complete faith and support of the owner, the board and the manager, and it is excellent news that the club will continue to benefit from his expertise.”
