Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley has admitted defeat in his attempt to sell the troubled Championship club and took it off the market on Tuesday night after failing to find a buyer prepared to match his £80million asking price.

Ashley moved quickly to reclaim control of Newcastle, promising to invest an extra £20m this week, and appointing caretaker boss Chris Hughton as his permanent manager, handing him an 18-month contract and ending Alan Shearer's slim chances of returning to the club.

All change: Having returned to the top of the Championship at the weekend, Newcastle are now back under the full control of Mike Ashley
