The Magpies slipped from fifth at the end of 2011-12 to 16th 12 months later as the demands of a return to Europe, injuries and a failure to sufficiently strengthen the squad took their toll.
Pardew met owner Mike Ashley and managing director Derek Llambias on Wednesday to identify what went wrong and plot a way forward and, despite concerted speculation that the 51-year-old might not survive those talks, he emerged with his job intact and with a mandate to carry on.
Llambias said: "Everyone connected with the club was disappointed to finish where we did last season, particularly on the back of such a fantastic year prior to that.
"Our discussions on Wednesday were very constructive and we pinpointed a number of factors that contributed to a season which fell below expectations.
"We are now looking forward and are entirely focused on the forthcoming campaign, with the expectation of at least a top-10 finish in the Premier League.
"There has been a great deal of speculation in recent weeks, but our desire, as we announced back in September, is to bring long-term stability to this club.
"It's up to us all now to work closely as a team to ensure next season sees us competing in the top half of the table again.
"We would all like to thank the fans for their continued support and assure them we remain committed to providing affordable football at St James' Park."
It is understood Pardew's future was never on the agenda as the three men sat down, and indeed he expressed his confidence that he would still be at the helm in August after Sunday's final day 1-0 home defeat by Arsenal.
But what is in little doubt is that a significant improvement will be required if he is to see out very much more of the eight-year contract he signed in September last year.
The former West Ham boss has already signalled his intention to recruit tailor-made experience as he prepares for another transfer window with his January signings, all from France, having enjoyed mixed fortunes in adapting to the rigours of English football.
His main focus will once again be to strengthen his striking department with Papiss Cisse having spent much of the second half of the season playing as a lone frontman following Demba Ba's departure for Chelsea.
With Andy Carroll having been ruled out as a viable target, the Magpies will cast the net far and wide once again, but cannot afford a repeat of their aborted moves for Luuk de Jong and Loic Remy last season if they are to get off to the kind of start they crave.

Alan Pardew's job at Newcastle United is safe - despite the club being threatened with relegation until the last week of the campaign.
Mike Ashley conducted an exhaustive inquest into the club’s disappointing Premier League campaign this week, and Pardew, now the second-longest serving top flight manager, faced a tough questioning.
But it seems Ashley got the answers he wanted from the 51-year-old, who has come under fire from frustrated supporters in recent weeks.
SportMail understands that Ashley will keep faith with Pardew, although that certainly does not go down too well with supporters, if out NU-MAD message board is anything to go by.
United have made no public comment on the speculation over the future of Pardew, who signed an eight-year contract in September.
However, it seems Pardew is a better option to Ashley than someone who would challenge the owners opinion.
Pardew is keen to bring “two or three” players to St James’s Park to strengthen a squad which was found wanting last season in the face of an injury crisis.
But his top target - Andy Carroll - is off the list, according to reports this morning.
Ashley doesn't want him back, as Carroll was one of the infamous "clique" that voiced an opinion against the Newcastle owner.
Nobody - but NOBODY - has an opinion when Ashley is about!
