The striker had been suffering from a virus and an ankle injury last week, forcing him to start the match at Eastlands on the bench.

Fabio Capello names his squad for next Tuesday's Euro 2012 qualifier with Montenegro today, with Carroll one of several players in contention to receive a call-up.

Even so, the fact Carroll was able to play any part at City could open the door for an international summons, especially as Capello is struggling with a chronic shortage of fully fit strikers.

Wayne Rooney is expected to feature in the squad but is still carrying the ankle injury that forced him to miss Manchester United's draw with Sunderland. Jermain Defoe is out following surgery, and Theo Walcott and Bobby Zamora also sidelined.

Emile Heskey, meanwhile, has rejected the chance to come out of international retirement for the Montenegro game, with his Aston Villa team-mate Stiliyan Petrov suggesting England would regret not appreciating the striker's assets while they had the chance. 'I know how important he was for England. Every time he was playing up front he had people playing around him and he helped a lot,' he said.

'He linked very well with everyone, with Owen, with Rooney and with everyone he played with.

'You appreciate things when you do not have them and we are really happy to have Emile in our team.

'People don't give him credit. He works hard every day and he has been a top striker for years in the Premier League. He is very underrated. But he has been fighting and he doesn't pay attention to all this.'

Elsewhere, Arsenal midfielder Abou Diaby could miss France's upcoming European Championship qualifiers after picking up an ankle injury in yesterday's match against Chelsea.

France play Romania on Saturday and Luxembourg the following Tuesday, having won just one of its first two Euro 2012 qualifiers last month.

Diaby came off with about 20 minutes remaining at Stamford Bridge.

Italy coach Cesare Prandelli has handed a surprise recall to veteran full-back Gianluca Zambrotta for Italy's Euro 2012 qualifiers against Northern Ireland and Serbia.
