Andy caps Toon comeback at Brit

Andy Carroll was the hero for struggling Newcastle as the striker headed a late equaliser in a 1-1 Premier League draw at Stoke on Saturday. Abdoulaye Faye had given the home side a deserved first-half lead but substitute Carroll looped home a header with nine minutes go - although the point was not enough to drag the Magpies out of the relegation zone. Stoke stay 13th. The visiting defence was immediately under pressure when Ryan Shawcross headed a yard wide in the third minute after a typically lively opening from the Potters. Kevin Nolan nodded a Nicky Butt cross straight at Thomas Sorensen in a rare attack from Alan Shearer's men in the 27th minute before the home side took the lead six minutes later. The Magpies were unfortunate to concede a corner when Ricardo Fuller seemed to get the last touch off Habib Beye's challenge - but from the resulting set piece Abdoulaye Faye lost marker Shola Ameobi and powered home a header from six yards. Stoke saw two efforts cleared off the line in the opening stages of the second period as they searched for a killer second goal, while Ryan Taylor's deflected free-kick had to be tipped over by Sorensen at the other end. Tony Pulis' men should have doubled their advantage with 20 minutes to go, however, when Fuller played in Matthew Etherington but the former West Ham winger pulled his effort well wide with only Steve Harper to beat. Carroll nodded inches wide as Newcastle pushed for an equaliser - and that duly arrived with nine minutes remaining when the aforementioned frontman rose brilliantly on the penalty spot to send a looping header over Sorensen from Duff's hopeful centre.
