Anderson calls for Ashley to dig deep

Former Newcastle defender John Anderson has warned Mike Ashley to expect a rollercoaster ride for the rest of the season unless he puts his hand in his pocket.

The Magpies owner is engaged in the process of recruiting the sixth manager of his three-and-a-half-year reign following his decision on Monday to part company with Chris Hughton.

As Alan Pardew and Martin Jol fought it out for the status of bookmakers' favourite for the vacancy with Newcastle hoping to make an appointment by the weekend, Anderson pointed to the lack of resources at Hughton's disposal as a reason for the club's fluctuating form.

He said: "Usually at this stage of the season, there is one side marooned at the bottom, but there isn't this time around.

"You win two or three games and all of a sudden, you shoot right up the table; you lose two or three and you go the opposite way.

"I don't think we will go down, but if Mike Ashley wants to stay in this Premier League, he needs to go and spend big money and buy quality. But I'm not sure he is prepared to do that."
