Ameobi And Mackems - Don't Yer Just Love Him!

Shola Ameobi has not always set St James' Park alight in his 13 years at the club, but when he hangs up his boots he will long be remembered as "THE MACKEM SLAYER"!

Ameobi rammed home a late equaliser to score his seventh goal in derby fixtures, and left himself just four behind the great Wor Jackie Milburn in the all-time scoring charts of the Tyne-Wear tussle.

Sunderland have now gone 12 years without winning on Tyneside, and have just one win in 15 derbies.

Shola climbed past Albert Shepherd to move on to seven goals with the striker now having more derby goals than greats like Hughie Gallacher, Alan Shearer, Peter Beardsley and Len White.

Shola Ameobi: “This game was all about our fans, and all about keeping them happy.

“We have got four points out of Sunderland this season and we are still top dogs in the North East.

“That’s what they want, and we’re glad we could give them it.

“I know more than most the effects of this game. You see how much it means to the fans.

"This is a game I didn’t want to miss, because it means so much to so many people in this area.

“We had to get a result by any means necessary, that’s the attitude we needed, we had to keep on fighting.

"If you need motivation for this match – you shouldn’t be at Newcastle.

“It’s crazy isn’t it? It is just one of those games where I seem to score in.

“It’s a game as a fan you look forward to at the start of every season. I was just fortunate enough to be in the right positions at the right times.”
