£55,000 A Week Toon Legend Joins Smogs!

29 November 2013 13:59
Is he still Newcastle United's greatest ever ...

... goalkeeper, or has Tim Krul edged ahead of Shay Given.

Krul took world acclaim for that stunning performance against Spurs two weeks ago, but one fan put on our message board: "One game doesn't make a legend - Shay is still the best ever."

Yesterday Shay Given, who is reported to be earning £55,000 a week, signed for Boro (* but I'm sure the Smogs won't be paying much of that amount).

Aston Villa boss Paul Lambert let him join Boro saying "Shay Given is a model pro".

The 37-year-old keeper joined Boro from the Premier League outfit on a one-month emergency loan before the window closed at 5pm on Thursday and is set to play against Bolton at the Riverside on Saturday.

While he's barely played any competitive football over the past six months, Given has been working hard on Villa's training pitch to make sure he's ready when needed.

If the Irishman, who has been capped 125 times, plays against Bolton, he'll be one of a select band of players who have represented the North-east big three clubs.

He made 461 appearances for Newcastle and 17 for Sunderland during a loan spell with the Wearside outfit.

Should he play on Sunday, it would be his 600th club game.

Pardew - In Or Out? YOU VOTE!

Three wins, but are we riding our luck? The question we ask - is Alan Pardew the man for Newcastle United? PLEASE VOTE!

ESPN FC: "The debate over Alan Pardew's suitability as Newcastle manager won't go away even after three consecutive victories.

Many of those who have watched Newcastle's wins over Chelsea, Spurs and Norwich still hold concerns about how the side are playing -- Tottenham had 20 more shots against Newcastle than Liverpool did when they beat the Magpies 6-0 late last season."

Twitter Search -

@johnregan51 'I support Pardew. Can't understand the haters. We have not had many better managers in last 50 years'

@nufcfans 'I strongly disagree with anyone calling for AP's head. It's fickle and impatient'

Both very strong statements in favour of the manager. There were plenty of anti-Pardew tweets to choose from, including:

@halliday_9 'I've never spoke to anyone who likes Pardew, that's the truth'

@lewisa_NUFC 'we have a very good team that is currently winning in spite of Pardew'

So we ask you to vote - is he the man for Newcastle United?

IDEAL FOR CHRISTMAS

MAGPIES IN EUROPE -

HARVEY TO PARDEW

The new version of "Magpies In Europe" is available NOW.

Although NUFC are not talking to the Chronicle or Sunday Sun ... we are!

And the full story is expected to be in newspapers this week.

The official new title is "Magpies In Europe - Harvey To Pardew" and is an up-dated version of "From Antwerp To Zurich" - which includes the 14 Europa League fixtures we played last season.

The 280-page book features match reports from the 134 European matches Newcastle United have played, starting with the memorable 4-0 win over Feyenoord in 1968 on our European debut.

Included are stats and the figures you would expect, but also each away fixture has the remarkable experiences of individuals who travelled to watch the matches.

Introduction by "Big Bad" John McNamee, part of the Fairs Cup winning team of 1969.

It is a fascinating history that every Newcastle United fan will enjoy.

And with a limited print-run, make sure you order a copy.
