5 key points about Newcastle's first season back in the Championship

22 June 2016 08:23

Relegation from the Premier League means Newcastle and Rafael Benitez will play in the Championship next season.

United's 52,000 capacity St James' Park will be comfortably the biggest venue in the division and as such a trip to the North East will represent a real day to remember for a number of second-tier clubs.

Newcastle are sure to be a scalp but Benitez needs to focus on getting the Black and Whites back up with the minimum of fuss.

Here, Press Association Sport dissects their fixture list.

1. All eyes on the opener

They may no longer be in the Premier League but Newcastle can be sure that they will remain in the full glare of the spotlight, as proven by the fact they will open the EFL season the day before everyone else on Friday August 5.

They make the trip to Craven Cottage to face Fulham - a game almost certain to be televised - and they will be expected to deliver.

2. Burton, Barnsley and banana skins

Burton Albion are in the Championship for the first time and will have December 17 marked on their calendar, which is when Newcastle visit their 7,000 capacity stadium for the first time.

Barnsley have been in the Premier League before, but that was nearly 20 years ago, and Newcastle's trip to Oakwell on October 18 will be eagerly anticipated. How Benitez's men deal with a Tuesday night in Barnsley will determine how well they handle life in the Championship.

3. No more Derby blues?

Regular beatings at the hands of local rivals Sunderland became an unwanted habit for the Toon but with them and Middlesbrough in the Premier League, there is no obvious derby clash for Newcastle.

Leeds are the closest side geographically and fans of both sides are likely to relish their meetings on November 19 (Elland Road) and April 15 (St James' Park).

4. Happy Christmas?

United can rejoice in two home games over the festive period. They face Sheffield Wednesday at St James' Park on Boxing Day and then Nottingham Forest on New Year's Eve.

Benitez will hope his side are firmly in the thick of the promotion hunt by this point.

5. Put the champagne on ice?

The bookmakers have Newcastle as the 2/1 clear favourites to win the title so fans could well be hoping for an early coronation.

United's last game of the season is at home to Barnsley on May 7 but they will hope to be home and hosed long before then. They have seven games in a packed April, starting with Wigan at home and then taking in Burton (h), Sheffield Wednesday (a), Leeds (h), Ipswich (a), Preston (h) and Cardiff (a).
