Netherlands v Chile: World Cup Match Preview

This game promises to be a fascinating encounter between two teams who have really impressed so far at this World Cup with victories that have consigned the reigning champions to a group stage exit. Netherlands v Chile and Australia v Spain kick-off at 5pm BST and will bring Group B to a conclusion.

The match at the Sao Paulo Arena between the Dutch and Chileans will be the first meeting of the two teams and will decide who will finish top of Group B and play the runners-up of Group A. For the Dutch a draw is enough to secure the top spot due to their superior goal difference but Van Gaal will be missing the suspended Robin van Persie for the clash. They may also be without the services of Bruno Martins after his concussion the previous week.

The South American side need a win but it remains to be seen if finishing first or second is the best option although it’s likely Brazil will see of Cameroon and finish first in their group. Aranguiz has picked up a knee injury so Jorge Sampaoli is expected to make some adjustments. Barcelona’s Alexis Sanchez will provide the Chile threat upfront and a lot may be expected of him. Chile have won four of their last six World Cup matches although that was after a long 13-match losing streak.

The Oranje are unbeaten in twelve group stage matches with their last defeat being against Belgium in 1994. Arjen Robben has scored eight goals in his last eight international appearances and four in four World Cup matches.
