Holland certain to qualify for Euro 2012

UEFA on Wednesday announced that Holland were assured their place at Euro 2012 even if they are edged out as Group E leaders by Sweden.

The Dutch beat Finland 2-0 in their latest qualifier on Tuesday to leave them atop their group on 24 points.

Despite the possibility of Sweden finishing qualifying as Group E winners Holland have done enough to ensure they will end up as at least the best runners-up of all the nine groups.

That means they join Spain, Italy and Germany as the teams to have assured their place at the Euro 2012 finals along with Poland and Ukraine, who benefit from automatic qualification as co-hosts of the competition.

The eight other second-placed teams go into the play-offs.

Defending champions and world Cup winners Spain booked their ticket with a 6-0 rout of Liechtenstein on Tuesday, while Italy gained passage with a 1-0 home win over Slovenia.
