Dutch press downbeat after Danish defeat

The main Dutch newspapers have assessed that the national side's chances of becoming European champions for only the second time are slim after their defeat to Denmark.

"Our hopes of winning the title can surely be put in the deep freeze," said the Algemeen Dagblad daily on its website after the 1-0 defeat.

Respected daily De Telegraaf said in its electronic edition that it was a "more than dramatic start" in a match that had been deemed "the easiest" of the group stages.

The domestic ANP news agency for its part relaunched the debate about Robin van Persie's performances at international level, after he had another torrid night for the Dutch.

"Van Persie once again forgot to shine on the big occasion," the agency said.
