Mazzarri stands by Lavezzi

New Napoli head coach Walter Mazzarri is determined to try and clear the air with Argentinian forward Ezequiel Lavezzi and get the best out of the South American.

Lavezzi reported back late from international duty, having mislaid his passport as he attempted to return to Italy, but featured in the victory over Bologna nonetheless.

Mazzarri refused to take any immediate action against Lavezzi, saying: "I have a real and frank relationship with my players and I always try to trust them.

"It's also happened to me that I lost my passport. I will talk with the lad and clear things up.

"Over the past week I called all the foreign players who were away, including Lavezzi, who I spoke with on the phone. That's all that matters to me."

Meanwhile, fears have been raised that Roma's veteran skipper Francesco Totti may need another knee operation after suffering a setback on his return to training.

The 33-year-old was injured after scoring both goals in the 2-1 win over Napoli two weeks ago and missed the clash with AC Milan after a fresh problem.

Roma's club doctor, Pier Paolo Mariani told the Corriere dello Sport: "The knee is swollen and that could be anything in this type of situation.

"I won't rule out an operation on the meniscus ligament at this stage."
