Rock-bottom Motherwell have been handed a major blow in their attempts to stay in the SPL with the news that Brian McLean will not play again this season.

The 21-year-old Northern Ireland international sustained medial ligament and cartilage damage in the sixth minute of Saturday's home defeat to Hearts.

"He's had a bad time with injuries this season, so it's hard on him," Steelmen boss Maurice Malpas told the club's official website.

"He's damaged the cruciate and will have an operation. He'll be out for the rest of the season.

"It's a big blow for the club, but it's also a massive blow for the player."
