Well's McDonald misery

Motherwell striker Scott McDonald looks set to be sidelined for up to three weeks after tearing a hamstring.

The 23-year-old has been forced to pull out of the Australia squad for the friendly international against Ghana later this month and Steelmen boss Maurice Malpas is particularly disappointed with the news as he thought the player had recently returned to his best form.

"He had a scan as we knew he had a problem with his hamstrings and it showed he has a wee tear and he will be out for the next two or three weeks," Malpas told the club's official website.

"This is a big disappointment for the player as he deserves the call-up (to the Australia squad) and would have been in a better frame of mind going into the game.

"Having said that, fitness is more important for the player and for the club and in the long run for Australia.

"He had a difficult start to the season as he wasn't right physically and mentally after missing a part of pre-season. But he's recently settled down again and has looked a far better player and has been scoring goals for us on a regular basis."
