We'll be positive - McCall

Motherwell manager Stuart McCall has warned his players they may have to reduce the pass count on the heavy McDiarmid Park pitch on Wednesday night - but he insists his team will always approach matches in a positive manner.

St Johnstone manager Derek McInnes described the pitch as "awful" following the goalless Clydesdale Bank Premier League draw against St Mirren on Saturday.

McCall admits his team may have to adapt their style, but feels that is nothing unusual for the winter months, and said: "You find that at this stage of the season, the parks will churn up. It's not like pre-season when you can knock the ball about and really whip it about."

He added: "It does become bobbly and it gives the advantage to the defenders. Your touch has got to be spot on and running with the ball becomes difficult.

"Our pitch was a little bit similar on Saturday and you maybe do try to change the way you play. But wherever we go we want to be positive and that won't change."

McCall and McInnes were team-mates at Ibrox in the 1990s and have remained in touch.

"I think Derek McInnes has done a terrific job with St Johnstone," the Motherwell boss said.

"I remember when Derek came to Rangers - when he was 23 or 24 - and he always wanted to listen and learn. He was one that I always thought was the studious type and would go on to be a real success in the management side of things.

"He always wanted to improve himself as a player and as a person, and he is a top man; having said that, we'll be enemies for 90 minutes."
