Stranraer - 24h on

Motherwell avoided the lurking banana skin in Stranraer and we can now anticipate Sunday's draw. However, the cup adventure won't last much longer if we deliver similar performance next time. Inconsistency must drive football managers crazy.  Stuart McCall was fulsome in his praise of the team that played so well in the recent games against Rangers and Kilmarnock.  He was kind in the post-match interviews and limited his criticism to “We have played better in the last two games” .  He went on to describe our performance as “professional”. McCall also confirmed that Jeffers in on the books and that he is “a lad who is a goalscorer in the box”.  That skill is badly needed as some of the feckless finishing on show against the Division 3 made clear.  The Stranraer ‘keeper was called into action all too rarely and our attempts from the edge of the box flew wide of the target.   The lack of flair inside the box suggests that the addition of an experienced defender – even one with Jerffers’ history – has to be the right move. Our growing injury list is a worry.  Hammell missed the game because of the hamstring pull last Wednesday and now Saunders has the same complaint.  Lasley took a boot to the left ribs in the second minute but although he soldiered on for half an hour he had to retire.  Surely he couldn’t play for 30 minutes with a cracked rib? Still, we got the result and the players can have a day or two to recover before the game at Ibrox next week.   Not long until the Cup draw now....
