Motherwell have refused to allow Hearts permission to take to Mark McGhee about the managerial vacancy at Tynecastle.
The side from the capital want the 50-year-old former Brighton, Millwall, Leicester City, Wolves and Reading boss to take on the role that has not been held since they parted company with Ukrainian coach Anatoly Korobochka in January.
A brief statement on the Steelmen's official website read: "We have received an official approach from Heart of Midlothian Football Club, seeking permission to speak with current manager Mark McGhee about the vacant managerial role at Tynecastle.
"After consideration, the Motherwell FC Board of Directors have decided to refuse this request."
Speaking after Motherwell's season ending 2-0 win at Hibernian on Thursday evening, McGhee admitted he had a dilemma on his hands over whether to leave Fir Park.
"If someone does come in for me, I'm going to have to really think long and hard about it," he said. "I've moved before and it's ended up not being the right thing."
