It's too soon to judge the significance of the win in Perth but at the end of the season we might look back and point to it as an important turning point in another successful season.
Not only did we end the sorry run of three consecutive league defeats but we gathered three points and scored three goals after a four game barren stretch. Yet, as Stuart McCall said after the match “We won't get too carried away”. He had told the players in preparation for the game that a good team doesn’t become a bad one overnight. Perhaps that’s a message that a section of the support needs to take onboard.
Steve Lomas was not a happy man. He was frustrated at the “criminal defending” and conceded that his team “didn’t get out of the box”. It is not an exaggeration to say that we could have scored three inside the first ten minutes.
Ojamaa can be excused his outrageous miss in the second minute, his two assists for the first and third goals were ample compensation. Murphy enjoyed playing from a more central position just behind the front two. Whether McCall will keep him there for the next few games remains to be seen. Law’s delicate chip late in the game delivered the last goal and he was able to celebrate with the Motherwell fans at the end of the main stand. The four hundred travellers had kept up a continuous series of songs and chants throughout the game.
Attention will now turn to Wednesday night when Dundee United come to Fir Park. This replay of the game that was a called off before a ball was kicked will end our one game backlog. A win would send us to third place in the table.
Before that we have the distraction of the Scottish Cup fourth round draw on Monday afternoon. After years of pulling an away tie at this stage in the competition for many years, we broke the duck last time and were paired with the winner of Elgin City and Queen's Park at home. The Queen's won the honour of visiting Fir Park and were duly dispatched. What will Monday bring?
