Smith enjoys perfect week

Teenage striker Darren Smith is starting to make up for lost time after an injury-ravaged last 12 months.

The 18-year-old Motherwell star suffered a serious knee injury last season but, having recovered from that setback, the last week has seen Smith make his Scotland Under-21s debut and net a crucial winner at Falkirk for the Steelmen.

Smith told the Daily Record: "It's been a great week. It was good to get the under-21 cap and it was topped off with coming on and getting the winner at Falkirk.

"It's been really good this season, even though I had a bad injury. I tore the cartilage in my knee and was out for six months to miss the back end of last season and the beginning of this one.

"It was tough mentally, but I came through that and have just been working hard. The gaffer has given me a chance and hopefully I've paid him back by getting goals."
