Ross County - 24h on

If ever a win was well-timed it was the hard fought first time victory in Dingwall. It may be the tonic needed to set Motherwell up for the busy festive schedule.

It was no surprise to hear opposing managers express differing views on the game.  McCall took the approach that "the first half won it for us" while Adams argued, "We totally dominated. With the chances we created, we obviously deserved to win.  We battered Motherwell and should have won by four or five today."

In truth a draw would have been a fairer reflection of the game but that would not have dampened the mood on the Motherwell team bus as it made the long journey south.  The result drew a line after the poor results in the last few weeks and lets the players look forward to the frantic holiday calendar with a degree of confidence.

Had we scored a third goal before the break we may have avoided the nervous closing period when County had us penned back in the final third.  As the manager said, "It was about character today.  We had a gutsy second half battling performance".  he added, "It was a big victory as the last couple of weeks haven't been easy".

Our stand-in goalie played a big part in the triumph and he thoroughly deserves his win bonus.  It was his debut as a first team player and in the difficult winter conditions he can be proud of his contribution.  He'll be with us for the five games in fifteen day spell that starts next weekend.

The holiday games against St Mirren (h), Aberdeen (a), Partick Thistle (a), St Johnstone (h) and Inverness (h) will be a big test.  Our small squad's resources are likely to be at full stretch as we enter the New Year but we have a very respectable 28 points from our 16 games (4 more than last season).

Preparations for the visit of the Paisley Saints can now begin.  The Saturday before Christmas normally sees a dip in attendance but the recent revival of the Buddie's fortunes might encourage a few more travelling fans to the South Stand.  Will Santa deliver an early present to the Fir Park faithful?

Have your say on the messageboard.
