Game 33 of the SPL season will see St Mirren at Fir Park on Saturday. Thereafter Motherwell will fight for second place while our visitors play on in the bottom half.
McCall’s men are intent on extending their unbeaten run and will be looking to secure win number five from six as the split cuts the league in two. Confidence in the camp should be high and with the club’s ‘Bring a Pal’ offer in operation for this game there should be a healthy home support in place.
The Buddies have had the best of the earlier meetings with an away draw and a home win to their credit but their current league form explains why they are in 10th place – only one win from eight. They shared points with Kilmarnock on Wednesday but reports suggested that St Mirren could have had the game wrapped up by half time.
With no threat of relegation to drive them it might be that we will face a team free of pressure. Will that be an aid or a hindrance? And what toll will a midweek game have on their stamina?
There are no indications from Fir Park that we have anything other than a full squad available so the odds are that an unchanged eleven will start the game. Higdon remains a banker for those who enter the prediction league but his contribution has been complemented by his free scoring colleagues. Motherwell have already exceeded the totals of league goals bagged in the last few seasons and with only one needed to match the 2005/6 tally of 55 it seems certain that a new SPL record will be posted.
A win for the visitors would seem to be unlikely and only a faltering performance from the Steelmen would suggest a draw. If we set out with the determination to maintain our current good form there's every reason to expect a good weekend topped off with a 2-0 win.
Remember the last time St Mirren were at Fir Park?
