Next up - Rangers at noon

28 April 2011 09:16
There are just four games left in this season's SPL and Motherwell fans will see the final Saturday game at Fir Park when rangers arrive for a noon kick off. Can we beat them on home turf for the first time since 2002? Faddy’s Boxing Day goal won the match and moved off the bottom of the table all those years ago and it’s about time that we ended the awful record against the Govan side.  Our players should be in buoyant mood with the recent runoff results.  A six game unbeaten run was topped off with a semi final victory and a wonderful revival at Tynecastle last week. Our opponents failed to beat their championship rivals last week and seem to be faltering.  There are suggestions that ex-Motherwell favourite McCulloch might have recovered sufficiently from his long tem injury to appear in the squad.  Ness is in the same position. Remember this?  O'Brien penalty - McGregor save There’s no doubt that the pressure will be on the visitors as they know that any slip up will end their slim hopes of finishing top of the heap.  On the other hand we have a more modest target.  With a guaranteed sixth place finish already earned we can set the target of overtaking Kilmarnock as a wee incentive as McCall ponders the bigger goal of the Cup final. Our claret and amber heroes showed at Tynecastle that they are in no mood to coast their way to Hampden and with competition for places in the starting eleven keen, we can expect a fighting performance. Hammell, Jennings and Humphrey were rested last week and it will be a surprise if none of them are on the pitch for the 12 o’clock kick off.  This is another game that has been rearranged at the whim of live TV (E$PN this time). Fir Park’s surface will have benefited from a few weeks’ rest and some recent sun and a close game is likely.  Can we upset the odds and enjoy a Saturday night with a 1-0 win?
