Motherwell are SPL runners up 2012/13
Motherwell were confirmed as league runners up when Inverness failed to win at Tannadice on Saturday. With two games remaining Stuart McCall's team has matched the achievement of Alex McLeish's squad in 1994/5.
It is difficult to put this success in context. The record books show that second place finishes in the top flight are rarities in our history. There was a 61 year gap from 1933/4 until 1994/5 then a further 18 years passed before this current triumph.
It is a happy coincidence that Sunday's game against Ross County will take place at Fir Park and a party atmosphere is guaranteed.
At the beginning of the season most Motherwell fans would have settled for a finish anywhere inside the top half of the table. Many felt that the chance to match the previous season’s 3rd place would be too much. In these post-Bosman times the turnover of players is high and the transition that has to be made for each new season causes a high degree of uncertainty.
There have been many high points in the season but the goal scoring feats of Higdon were deservedly singled out by his peers. His award of the SPFA Player of the Year trophy is also recognition of the contribution his team mates made to our successful campaign.
Although we can anticipate another entry to the Europa League, there will be some disappointment as the team that entertained us this season will not face the new challenge. Law and Randolph, at least, will be absent and we'll have to hope that able replacements can be found. But those concerns can be placed on the back burner as we pay tribute to the current squad for delivering a great season.
