McHugh delighted with strike

Motherwell substitute Bob McHugh was thrilled to score his first goal in the SPL - just four days after seeing one ruled out in a cup clash.[LNB] McHugh came off the bench on Saturday to score the Fir Park side's late winner in a 1-0 result against Aberdeen following a pacy breakaway after the visitors had failed to capitalise on a corner kick at the opposite end of the pitch.[LNB]The goal was even more special as McHugh had seen an extra-time effort ruled out against Hibernian in the Scottish Communities League Cup, with the Easter Road side going on to beat Motherwell 7-6 on penalties to reach the quarter-finals.[LNB]"I'm delighted to get my first SPL goal," he said.[LNB]"I've been waiting a while for it and although I've scored a few goals in other competitions, it's good to get that first SPL strike under my belt.[LNB]"It was obviously disappointing scoring what I thought was a perfectly good goal in midweek which I thought should have stood, so that was a setback, but to get on and score more than makes up for it.[LNB]"The manager tells us to be positive and I was trying to be as direct as possible. I was going for goal and looked up to see what the best option was, but I was determined to get my strike away and, lucky enough for me with my left foot, it went in.[LNB]"[Former manager] Craig Brown actually had a joke with me before the game and said, 'don't you be coming on and scoring the winner', and I said, 'I'll try not to!'[LNB]"It was an even game and I don't know if a draw would perhaps have been a fair result.[LNB]"I've been training well under Stuart McCall and enjoying it. He's been telling me to be patient and wait for my chance and hopefully I can take my chance when I get it and get a start."[LNB]Aberdeen forward Scott Vernon admitted the Pittodrie side were "bitterly disappointed" by the late defeat, which means they remain second-bottom of the SPL and still searching for their first away win and goal of the season.[LNB]He said: "We felt we deserved a point at least out of the game, so it was very frustrating.[LNB]"It's tough at the moment as things aren't going our way. If we knew why we'd know how to sort it out, but it's an ongoing thing from the players and manager trying to find the formula to change it and give us a spark.[LNB]"The frustrating thing is that we're not playing the worst football in the world. If we were coming off having played terribly and getting battered every game, you wouldn't be able to see light at the end of the tunnel.[LNB]"But we're doing okay, just not well enough. We aren't scoring enough goals and we're conceding soft goals.[LNB]"We're giving our all but just not quite getting the results, so we need to keep going, giving 100 per cent and hope something changes.[LNB]"We've got to be tough and get through it."
