McGlinchey sets sights on WC place
Published: 09 Feb 2010 - 09:10:03
The former Celtic youngster, 23, was raised in Glasgow but was capped for his homeland after moving to Australia last season to play for Central Coast Mariners. With the season Down Under set to come to a close, McGlinchey was delighted to return to Scotland, where he hopes his form will keep him in the plans of New Zealand coach Ricki Herbert. McGlinchey, who could make his debut against Rangers at Fir Park on Wednesday night, said: "I asked my agent if we could get anything fixed up and he came back with Motherwell, and as soon as he said that I wanted to come and thankfully the move came off. "The World Cup is massive. I didn't want to be sitting about for three months when our season finished in two weeks so I thought the best thing was to be in a football environment and be training and playing and doing the best I can." McGlinchey hopes he can do his former club Celtic a favour if he makes his debut against their Old Firm rivals. He said: "I can't wait for my debut whenever it is but, if it comes against Rangers, it will be an added bonus and I will be looking forward to it. "Obviously Rangers are a great team. "But everyone knows I support Celtic so, if I get the chance to score, I will hopefully put it away. "I'm glad of the time I had at Celtic, I worked under some great coaches and I'm thankful for what they did for me. "At the time you do think you can (make a name for yourself). "You have guys like Tommy Burns and Martin O'Neill turning up at your door and making a fuss over you, then you think, 'this might be different for me'. "But it wasn't to be and I had to leave to further my career and that's what I'm doing."
