McCall: We took Rangers all the way

Motherwell boss Stuart McCall felt he ran his old team close at Hampden as Rangers eventually triumphed 2-1 to book a Co-operative Insurance Cup final showdown with Celtic. Maurice Edu's first-half opener was cancelled out by Keith Lasley but a Steven Naismith header proved to be decisive as the holders scraped through the semi-final. McCall, who still refers to Walter Smith as "gaffer" from his time as a Rangers player, said: "I've got mixed emotions. I'm disappointed because I thought the performance at least merited extra-time but I'm really proud of the players. "I said before the game that as long as they can come back into the dressing room and look each other in the eye after the game, that's all we can ask for. Here our best just wasn't good enough to get the result but I don't think there was anything between the sides. "There is a disappointed group of players in the dressing room but I'm a very proud manager. Apart from the result, it was a proud day for myself. "It was a full-strength Rangers team, not like in England where people put weakened sides out, and the gaffer wanted to win. We took them all the way and all in all I thought we performed well."
