McCall lauds Goodwillie goal

Motherwell manager Stuart McCall praised Dundee United goalscorer David Goodwillie and his own players for their part in an entertaining Scottish Cup tie which ended 2-2. Goodwilliw netted United's first equaliser in a quarter-final draw with an acrobatic effort just before half-time, which took Motherwell goalkeeper Darren Randolph and the rest of Tannadice by surprise. The Scotland international netted from just outside the six-yard box after beating Shaun Hutchinson to Craig Conway's cross, instantly drawing comparisons with Wayne Rooney's effort in the recent Manchester derby. The goal cancelled out John Sutton's first-minute header and United levelled again when the unmarked Jon Daly slotted home Danny Swanson's cross, 64 seconds after Sutton had netted again from close range after smart play from Francis Jeffers and Stevie Hammell. "We came to have a go, maybe people thought we would come and play 4-5-1 but I thought we needed to have a go," McCall said. "Obviously I'm disappointed to be ahead twice and be pegged back. But the first goal from them is an outstanding goal, fantastic ability from an excellent player. "Sometimes you have to hold your hands up and say `well played'. But I thought our second goal was a lovely footballing goal and we proved again in patches what we're capable of."
