Saturday was a good day! While we would all settle for three points no matter the performance, on this occasion we can enjoy looking back at a fine team effort that fully deserved the win.

Big Terry must be having nightmares anytime he sees us in the fixture list.  Our record against them is outstanding, 4-1, 5-1 and 3-0 is this season’s haul with Higdon bagging 6 of the best.  Our striker is fast closing in on the 20 goal mark and in an interview after the game he let it be known that his target is 25.  Let’s hope he exceeds it.

Carswell had a good game and it would appear that we can consider the 19 year old to be more than a ‘one of the youngsters’.  He covered a lot of ground and kept up the work rate for the full 90 minutes.  Without wanting to burden him with an over ambitious comparison, his posture and running style remind me of a young O’Donnell.

Law produced another fine performance and he was unlucky to see his second half effort fall on the wrong side of the goal line after beating the ‘keeper and striking the bar.  Higginbotham endeared himself to the support with a solid showing on the left wing.  There were a few incisive forward runs that demonstrated why McCall was happy to add him to the squad.  The only cause for concern was the injury to Ramsden.  One report suggested that he had a broken bone in his hand.

The reward for the win is to see us in sole ownership of second place and with the benefit of a game in hand.  That sight will give the players a boost following the long intervals between recent games but the pace will pick up as February comes to an end.  There are midweek and weekend games  aplenty ahead  - though the next Saturday game at Fir Park is a month away!

Tuesday brings Dundee United and a chance for us to strengthen our position.  They’ll be smarting after the drubbing they had at Parkhead but we have a great chance show that we’re ‘best of the rest’.

Have your say on the messageboard.
