Southend United left-back Steven Hammell has returned to Motherwell after spending the last 18 months at Roots Hall.
Hammell moves to Fir Park for £110,000 and has penned a two-and-a-half year contract with the Steelmen.
Boss Mark McGhee told the club's official website: "We lost Jim Paterson and we had to replace him instantly, so we've done that with Hammell.
"Simon gives us that little bit of something extra on the left-hand side. He's got a good left foot with a good engine and he'll get up and down."
