Glamour friendly: Fir Park Corner FC v FPC Legends

Saturday sees a unique event in the history of Fir Park Corner FC. Before the Race Night in Jack Daniels Bar, the team will face a selection of FPC "Legends" who have graced, or disgraced in some cases, the Corner jersey over the past 12 years.

The match was initially planned  to celebrate the club's tenth anniversary but was put on hold as the  team were in the throes of a record-breaking Scottish and British League winning season, the highlight of club's history to date. The team took the name of this very website back in 2001 as it was created by a group of like-minded Motherwell fans who fancied a kickabout on a Saturday morning while following their team around the country. The suggestion was floated on the message board and soon gathered momentum. Training or any real preparation was deemed unnecessary and so a match was arranged for  Saturday 5th May 2001 against Motherwell  Unofficials, an existing fans team led by James Reid and Ricky Mullen. A complete lack of fitness, organisation and ability shone through on the Fir Park astroturf pitch behind the South Stand, with a 9-1 reversal (followed by a 2-0 home defeat to Aberdeen for Motherwell in the afternoon), but more importantly, a new club was born.

The first team - May 2001

The hearty band, made up mainly of kids and has-beens, persevered through the first season encountering many score- lines similar to the one inflicted upon us on our debut.  Particularly galling was a 20-3 reversal suffered at the hands of Hearts supporters Real Maroon at Herriot-Watt University, but the spirit would not be dampened.  Then, in darkest Airdrie on game number 22, something magical happened.  Fir Park Corner had threatened a few times to break the losing run, but to do it in the back yards of our biggest rivals made the 3-2 triumph all the sweeter.  This catalyst spurred the team on and we then embarked on our first WorldNet, a tournament held in Leeds featuring teams from all around Europe on display.  The Motherwell boys acquitted themselves well in their first visit, narrowly missing out on qualification from the group stages and dropping into the lesser Plate competition, reaching the final only to suffer golden goal heartbreak against a more experienced Aberdeen side.

WorldNet and the British IFA Cup became regular fixtures  in the FPC calendar and saw the lads play in places all over the country, from Aberdeen to Kingston-Upon-Thames and most places in between. However, it was the Merseyside Supporters Tournament in 2009 that brought the 'Corner their first silverware, with a hard-fought victory over Rochdale in the final at Tranmere Rovers Prenton Park training ground.  The crowning glory to date for the team followed in 2011 when, after 4 consecutive years of finishing in second place in the Scottish League, they won the Scottish and British League Championships.  The team broke two records along the way - becoming the first side from north of the border to take the British crown, and being the first team to win the Scottish league undefeated, with only one draw away to St Johnstone blotting the copybook in a remarkable campaign.

This Saturday sees a team take to the field at Ravenscraig in which every one of these seasons is represented in a light-hearted exhibition match to mark the history of the club and raise some much-needed funds for the current crop. There will then be a small function in Jack Daniels before the 'Well play host to St Mirren in the afternoon. The day is then rounded off by the Race Night in the same pub at night where hopefully the club coffers will be swelled enough to keep the lads going for a further 12 years!
