Gannon already had impact - Lasley
Published: 02 Jul 2009 - 06:59:25
Gannon has had just three days of training to prepare the Steelmen for the first leg of the Europa League qualifying round at Airdrie's Excelsior Stadium. However, he has already made a positive impression on the players and got his points across. The former Stockport manager is aiming to produce attractive but effective football and may employ the 4-2-3-1 formation that drew much success with County. "He's got clear ideas on how he likes the game to be played," said Lasley. "It's up to us to take that on board as quickly as we can and try to implement that. Little things hopefully people will see starting to take shape. "Obviously it's a short space of time, I'm sure he would like more time with us before the first competitive game. "But it's not to be, we've got a game and we'll try our best to implement some of his ideas as soon as possible." Gannon will have to be more pragmatic in his first match in charge with just 11 experienced players available to him following numerous departures from Fir Park this summer - although 24-year-old midfielder Steve Jennings was yesterday brought in from Tranmere, albeit too late for this tie. A Well side featuring the untried Jonathan Page at right-back lost 3-1 to Welsh champions Rhyl in a closed-doors game on Saturday. But Lasley is not reading too much into that friendly, which saw Motherwell concede three goals in the opening 11 minutes. "I think Saturday's game was really good just to get into a game situation," the 29-year-old said. "We had only been in training for a handful of days. You can train all you like but an 11 v 11 game is a different kettle of fish. "It was just good to get in some game time and that will hopefully stand us in good stead." Llanelli boss Andy Legg has plenty of European experience with his current club and Swansea, but he is not expecting that to be crucial against Well. "It helps but it's funny, I don't really look at it as a European tie," the 42-year-old said. "It's not going to be played in a European fashion at all. "It's two British sides and they are going to play totally differently to European teams. "Motherwell are probably glad they are playing us because fitness levels will be on a par, or they should be higher than us given they train every day. "That's better than playing a team who are midway through their season. We found that out playing the Latvian champions last year. "We beat them 1-0 in the first leg when adrenalin pulled us through. The next leg we were absolutely on our knees and lost 4-0."
