At least we kept a clean sheet, the first for over a month, though we failed to score. Assuming the decision to switch Murphy for Humphrey was purely tactical it deserves some examination. Murphy has been a fixture for us so far this season. He has scored four from his previous 15 league games and started in every one. His skill at collecting the ball from the middle or left of the pitch then forging forward has caused opposition defences regular problems. Some take the view that Jamie’s form has shaded in the last few weeks. Daley was given his first start last week and rewarded the manager with a wonderful winning goal. It was a brave choice to play both Humphrey and Daley, will McCall make the same choice when Hibs visit on Friday evening?
The day will be better remembered by many who turned up for the short ceremony to mark the arrival of the memorial to Uncle Phil. It was a well managed occasion and the Trust and club are due credit for their efforts. It was interesting to listen to John Boyle refer to the fans’ loyalty to the club as he addressed those who attended. He didn’t miss the opportunity to encourage them to participate in the upcoming community ownership initiative – always a salesman!
There was a pleasing incident as the team finished their pre-match preparations. It followed a wild shot from Higdon as the strikers went through a shooting routine. The ball flew at some pace into the Cooper Stand and crashed into a woman as she was about to settle into her seat. Her drink went flying! Higdon acknowledged her discomfort but it was also noted by Craigan. Then, as the players were recalled to the dressing room, the captain called her down the steps and presented her with his training top. A simple act, but one that was appreciated by the crowd (and the lady!).
