Craigan wants cup win for fans

Motherwell skipper Stephen Craigan believes the club can win the Scottish Cup as a 'thank you' to their supporters.

Well, who last won the competition in 1991, became the first team to book their place in the Hampden Park showpiece, seeing off St Johnstone with a convincing 3-0 win. They will face either Aberdeen or Celtic after early goals from Craigan and Jamie Murphy were added to with a long-range John Sutton strike.

"If we can perform well and play well we will have a good chance," Craigan told Sky Sports 1. "The 1991 win lives long in the memories of the supporters of this club and this is a chance for us to give them something back."

Motherwell were always the favourites to see of St Johnstone but Craigan felt the scoreline may have been kind to them.

"We had high expectations coming into the game and there wasn't much between the team despite the scoreline," he said. "We played well and set our stall out, scoring early and giving ourselves a platform."

Craigan is not known for his goalscoring feats and admitted he was not sure how to react to his fifth-minute opener.

He added: "I didn't know what to do! Its a strange feeling scoring a goal.

"People have constantly written me off and have had a pop at me but I've got a Scottish Cup final to look forward to.

Sutton scored the spectacular third goal that killed off the semi-final before half time, but he admitted the players were not taking anything for granted after experiencing the euphoria of a memorable comeback in a league game against Aberdeen last season.

"Last year we came from 6-2 down to get a 6-6 draw and we know anything can happen," he said. "We just snuffed out any hope they might have had in the second half."
