Close season - two weeks in

06 June 2013 08:55
It's now more than a fortnight since we last saw Motherwell in action and it seems like ages until the Europa League gets underway on 1 August. Until then, off field activities will have to supply a poor substitute for live football.

Hammell (and assistant national coach McCall) to have extended their season into June and are with the Scotland squad in Croatia ahead of Friday’s world cup qualifier but Ojamaa has endangered his relationship with the Estonian manager following a body swerve of a series of friendlies.  Reports suggest that he elected to visit Poland to watch Lech Poznam – the team that has been bidding for his services.  So far the Motherwell board has resisted the sale.

Several of the 2012/13 team came to the end of their contracts as the season ended and, inevitably, some have moved on.  Law was first to go and he has taken the bold step of joining the confusion at Ibrox.  For a while it seemed that Humphrey would join him but Preston won his signature earlier this week.  Both players made a huge contribution to our success in the last few seasons and they deserve our thanks.

The spotlight has now fallen on Higdon and Barnsley have made him an offer.  We can’t match the wages that are available to players in the English second tier and the chance of seeing the SPL’s top scorer in claret and amber next season look slim.

Meanwhile the club continued its communication strategy with the fans by issuing an update statementreflecting on the season past and the road ahead.  We were one game away from breaking even but a second consecutive loss is on the cards.  The lack of a main league sponsor and the resulting uncertainty merely underline the need for the Well Society to step up to provide the financial backstop.

Key dates - SPL fixtures released Wednesday 19 June, Europa League draw Friday 19 July.
