The damaged seats will be repaired in time and Celtic will pick up the sizeable bill. Mending the problems on the playing surface will be a much more difficult task. Evidence of our problems is clear to see; we’ve scored three goals in the last seven outings and lost the last two home games by a 9-0 aggregate. It’s not as though we’ve been unlucky in front of goal. Against Albion Rovers we could muster only one attempt on target and against Celtic we failed to trouble Forster.
The win at Kilmarnock helped us to maintain a league position that many believed was flattering despite the old chestnut reminding us that the league table never lies. In truth our position may be a reflection on the poor quality of some of our opponents but this weekend’s results have cost us a couple of places and we are now fifth.
It will come as no surprise to the manager and players that many supporters are looking for changes. The growing frustration following recent performances has delivered the expected criticism but fans should not expect any drastic action from the club. The overriding strategy of the board is to balance income and expenditure and with another loss on the cards following our disappointing cup exits, there will be no wish to take on the added burden that would follow a sacking.
Change is needed but it has to come on the pitch. We face Ross County (a) and St Mirren (h) in the next fortnight and a few points will be needed if we are to retain a top six place.
Well Society AGM
The ‘Well Society AGM is on Monday and we’ll be given an update on our progress toward fan ownership. There have been no reports of a membership surge and local companies don’t seem to be queuing up for corporate benefits. Can the club and Society come to an agreement to reduce the ambitious £1.5 million target? If not the long term goal may not be reached. The club has always argued that Society funds should be used as a temporary overdraft and not as a plug for longer term losses. That hope may also be tested if the team continues its slide down the table. It should be an interesting meeting!
