Morton knock Stranraer off summit

Morton leapfrogged Stranraer at the top of the Scottish League One table as goals at the end of each half sealed a 2-0 home win.

The hosts extended their unbeaten league run to six matches and secured an eighth home league success of the season thanks to a goal from Declan McManus in the 44th minute and a late effort from Mark Russell.

Stranraer began the day in top spot and almost took an early lead when Christopher Aitken forced home goalkeeper Derek Gaston into a fine save from his ninth-minute shot.

Midfielder Grant Gallagher twice went close to giving Stranraer a first-half lead, but McManus struck in the closing stages of the first period when he converted Ross Caldwell's ball into the penalty area.

Gallagher planted a second-half header over the crossbar and Aitken's shot was well saved by Gaston before the Stranraer midfielder fired off target with another effort.

Morton made sure of the points in time added on when substitute Joe McKee set up defender Russell and he made no mistake from close range.
