Shrimps midfielder Mark Duffy had a penalty saved by North End goalkeeper Andy Lonergan in the 30th minute and Alan Irvine's men took control thereafter. Chris Brown headed them into the lead and Stephen Elliott doubled the advantage on the stroke of half-time before Barry Nicholson, Neal Trotman and Neil Mellor all netted after the break. Michael Twiss claimed a late consolation but McIlroy said: "We did well in the first 35 minutes. "We missed two great chances, missed a penalty kick and you can't do that at places like Preston. "Then I think we gave away four really soft goals. With good Championship players like Preston have, they are going to hurt you."
