Sammy warns Wayne

Morecambe boss Sammy McIlroy believes Wayne Rooney could face a tough time if he makes the move across Manchester. United boss Sir Alex Ferguson yesterday confirmed in a statement that Rooney's representatives had told chief executive David Gill on August 14 that the player wanted to leave Old Trafford. Barcelona, Real Madrid, Chelsea and Manchester City have all been linked with moves for the England striker. City boss Roberto Mancini this morning insisted there had been no contact with their rivals over Rooney - but McIlroy would not rule out the player moving across the city. McIlroy, who played nearly 350 games for United between 1971 and 1982 and also represented City later in his career, said: "It's an unbelievable situation. Carlos Tevez has done the same thing and at the moment has done very well. "But to go just across the water with the fans at United loving him, he could be in for a rough ride. "There was talk of a new contract and how he was going to stay for life, now he doesn't want to sign it...it's baffling me to be honest with you."
