Shrimps crush Vale

Morecambe took sweet revenge for a 7-2 battering at Vale Park last season with an easy 4-0 victory over Port Vale which extended their unbeaten away record to eight league games.

Defences were well on top early on but the visitors took a firm grip on the game after Jason Price fired them ahead in the 27th minute.

Vale goalkeeper Stuart Tomlinson failed to hold a skidding shot from Danny Carlton and Price pounced to fire in the rebound from six yards.

Morecambe then dominated the rest of the first-half and the impressive Lewis Alessandra capitalised on some poor defending to sprint clear and clip a clever shot over the advancing Tomlinson eight minutes before the interval.

Vale were booed off at half-time and there were brief signs of a recovery when Marc Richards forced Barry Roche's first serious save of the contest two minutes after the restart.

But the visitors were otherwise untroubled as they protected their advantage before compounding Vale's misery with two late goals.

Laurence Wilson crashed a penalty in off the underside of the crossbar after Gary McDonald was fouled by Liam Chilvers four minutes from time.

And substitute Andrew Fleming completed the rout when he buried a close range header from McDonald's 90th-minute cross.
